We love it when Maine Team members hit the big time. In this case, a whooping three members were all finalists in the DIY Wedding Crafts Contest feature on Martha Stewart Weddings. Welcome to FloDo Designs. I inherited my love of hand crafting from my mother. I learned to sew at the age of 10 and have expanded that creative interest to include creating vibrant art pieces using experimentation and my own inherited curiosity.

As a fiber artist I thoroughly enjoy using mixed media to create unique pieces of art. I enjoy working with all forms of textiles, fibers, paints, wood, metal, beads and paper. From woodworking to doll and jewelry making, with the exception of soap and candle making, there is not a craft that cannot be done in my studio.

My studio space is set up with flexibility in mind. What may serve as a sewing table one day, may be my design space the next, or a production site on another day. As most of my crafting includes sewing or embroidery, I have configured my space to accommodate the use of 4 machines at one time. Organization is the key. My favorite haunts for picking up inexpensive storage items are office supply, hardware and dollar stores. Baskets are my favorite item for storage and organization of projects; this is very important as I usually have several projects going at one time. I am all about repurposing. The wooden boxes used for packaging Clementine oranges are perfect for acrylic paint storage and they stack easily. Clear acrylic containers used for mixed greens in the grocery store, once they are washed thoroughly make great stackable storage for small projects.

My office space is separate from my studio. It serves many purposes as well. I use it to digitize embroidery designs, manipulate photos, create greeting cards and meet with clients; this small space contains quite a bit. One trick I use to keep my spaces looking neat and tidy is to create a very simple fabric curtain hung from a tension rod on my bookshelves. The curtain hides mismatched storage containers, books and any other supplies I need readily available and makes the space look more coordinated and neat.

My inspiration comes from many sources. As an amateur photographer, my mind sees the world in colors and fabric. I automatically translate photos into 2 dimensional quilts and 3 dimensional fabric art. I find inspirational color combinations in magazines and catalogs and use blank books to organize pictures, swatches and articles for future reference and to keep my ideas organized. Cork bulletin boards are always covered with inspirational articles and colorful ideas as well.

The article highlights Coco (Loving Anvil) and Gil Corral's performance space in Biddeford. Dubbed the Hog Farm Studio Annex, the space is the big brother to the original barn venue on the couple's property. This is my first crafting nook. I am so excited to share photo's of it with you. Even though my jewelry is the only thing that's made it out into the world, my nook also holds supplies for all my other hobbies. Photography, Knitting, Painting and Sewing.

The first photo is my project wall. It's how I keep tract of whats for sale. The top two rows are on my etsy and the bottom row is my "works in progress" row. Pieces in all stages, from just an idea to finished just needing to be photographed and put online. I always feel so accomplished when I look at that wall.

Next is my desk, inherited from my grandparents, makes a wonderful universal work station. I also have a gift wrapping and packaging station, which I will photograph for you in the near future.

An inside view. I'm never going to be a very organized person. But I have found a system that works for me. It's not complete chaos but it gets close sometimes.

And lastly, my tackle box stack. I can find almost anything I'd ever need in these little compartments. I'm always discovering new thing's I never knew I owned. It's very fun to paw through when I feel like wasting a little time. It doesn't take long before I'm inspired.

Work Spaces: Cozink

This week's featured work space comes from Etsy Maine Team member Grace of Cozink.

When we moved from a very tiny house in Litchfield to a larger duplex (we rent 1/2 of an early 1800's farm house) in Mount Vernon- the extra upstairs room got earmarked as a studio space from the get-go. It was one of the first rooms I started working on, and within a week it was set up and ready to use.

My must-haves for inspiration were color, light, and family art. The color was mostly taken care of by hanging prints, and I just commited to never hanging curtains in that room so light was always natural and free-flowing. As for family art... several members of my family have gotten together to form an art and music collective (my shop name comes from this- the CozInk Collective), and I'm pretty much constantly inspired by what the other folks in my family have going on in their creative endeavors.

My studio music collection is made up of my cousin's folk duo Arborea, which she created with her husband, and my brother's many music projects like L/A Comp (a compilation of music local to the Lewiston/Auburn area), Earbait (a project where musicians are all given the same set of lyrics, and each create their own music to go along with those lyrics- the CD gathers the many interpretations on one album), and his band, Sunwell.

Some of the art on the walls is mine, some is family's. The big framed piece over the work table is a print from my very first printmaking experience. I learned printmaking at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle, and I did it through a high school program, where we would go spend a long weekend at Haystack learning a new art form. I did the 3-day printmaking workshop, and on the last day we did these big group prints- they're about 16 x 20, and every student in the workshop worked on each print, then everyone signed each one, and we all got to take one home as a keepsake of our class. It's become a very important piece of artwork in my house, because I so value that weekend at Haystack, and the craft that I learned there. Obviously, it's stayed with me! I even taught a printmaking workshop of my own this summer atSweetland Retreat, so it's kind of come full circle.

The three sunset photos were taken by my sister, Sarah (waterinthesky.etsy.com), who lives in San Diego. The photo above those is one of my all time favorites, because for me it sort of shows the relationship that I have with my brother and sister. When it was taken, I was living in Wyoming, and my brother and sister were still in Maine, but it's kind of a group portrait for me, because the photo (which is a portrait of my brother playing guitar) was taken by my sister, and my brother is playing in front of a few pieces of my artwork. So in a way, we're all in it, or at least all our art is in it. We stay close even though we've each been far from Maine at times, and we stay involved in eachother's lives, and in eachother's creative lives too, so that picture is important to me. It's always in whatever space I'm creating in.

A girls search for a market place that is right for her

To find ones ideal market, one must first know who their customer is.
Here are some simple questions I compiled to help you figure that out.

- What do they look like?

- What age and sex are they?

- What is their income levels?

- Where does your customer like to go, visit, shop?

- What values does your customers strongly associate themselves by?

- What are the values they least associate with?

- What about your company/product appeals to them?

- What is on the top of their impulse buy list? ( mine is white t-shits)

You must by now have a pretty good idea of who your marketing to. Now, what venue will bring you in direct contact with your customer?

I've chosen to use my business as the example, for I happen to already know the answers to all these questions.

My customer is young, college aged to early 30's woman. She considers herself an individual, artsy, unique, environmentally conscious, and creative. She loves to own vintage, recycled, or one of a kind things and impulsively buys bizarre stuff as long as the price tag is $10 or less.

In hunting for places to come in contact with my future customer, I'd hit a wall of anxiety every time I approached the idea of doing a craft show. I couldn't afford almost all of them, my inventory was small and I felt like an ugly duckling in comparison to jewelry smiths. So I would always find myself passing on registering for them.

I instead tapped into a market I had belonged to for years. The indie music world (which I had been knee deep in since I was fifteen). I had finally found a place where my crafts an I fit in.

It seems so obvious in hind site. Sometimes the answers are really right in front of you.

So here's the success part. I took my jewelry on the road with me in July when I went on tour with my band Crunk Witch. I had high hopes and no evidence to back up my excitement. I'll admit I was scared at first and chickened out of setting up my display at our first 3 shows. I quickly got past the "putting myself out there" jitters and to my hopes... I was instantly met by my "Ideal" customers. They were drawn to me because I was certainly something different, something they had never seen before. I offered them everything they were always looking for in a place they didn't expect to find it. They got to meet me personally and hear my bands music. They knowingly contributed to us making it to our next destination.

At the end of it all, what we walked away with in profit, was the exact amount I sold in jewelry. If I hadn't put myself out there, we would have walked away from three weeks of work with $0 in our pockets.

It is always said it is easier to find success if you walk in the opposite direction of the crowd.

So after sharing with you my story of finding my ideal customer in my ideal environment. I really hope this inspires you to really think about where your customer is, not where they "should" be.

How do you take care of yourself?

We all have crazy lives, filled to the brim with family, friends, jobs, and many obligations and stressors. Having recently had some stress-filled months dealing with family and health problems, I am always looking for new ways to renew, relax and stay inspired. Many people use an art or a craft for that purpose, but when we also sell our art, it becomes more than a hobby. We feel obligated to do it, which can make it less fun and more like a “job”, which, in turn, makes it more difficult to use as a way to relax. So how do you relax, renew and stay inspired? This question was recently put to our Etsy Maine Team members, and I received many wonderful responses.

We live in such a beautiful state, I wasn’t surprised that many people return to nature for their relaxation. Sara from Tenderfoot Creations, who lives in our biggest city, takes time to get out of the city: “I enjoy going for hikes in the woods and visiting the ocean. The fresh air and physical activity relaxes and renews me like nothing else. I return home full of good energy and ideas.”

Dani at Blue Shoe Studio also finds nature a wonderful way to relax and renew. In warm weather, she spends a lot of time in her vegetable garden, sometimes weeding, sometimes allowing plants to grow wild to see what they become. The act itself is relaxing, and the plants provide inspiration for future projects. “Currently I have let one crazy radish go completely wild and it's turned into this beautiful upright viney thing with the most delicate pink and white blooms - kind of a cross between a begonia and an orchid, only smaller scale - with these weird little stunted green pods.” This garden time also gives Dani time alone, which is something I am sure we all would like more of.

In the fall, Dani spends time in nature, sketching the beautiful colors and lines. As the weather gets colder, she begins to cook more comfort foods and work on projects that are inspired by her warmer weather jaunts. In the winter, she sleds with her family, nearly every day that it is warm enough. "The whish going down the hill and the vigorous hike back up is enough distraction to clear any mind. Again, it's not relaxing per se, but the sparkle of the snow is captivating and redirects a busy mind to the simple elegance of nature. And the laughter of children - that is hard to top.”

Dale from saintNICHOLAStoo tends to work 24/7, even carving in front of the TV in the evenings, and he must sometimes force himself to take a break. His backyard is his haven: “We have two small water garden ponds. I relax on our deck with a cold drink, listening to the peaceful, soothing sounds of the water fountains. It is so therapeutic that I am planning on getting a small indoor fountain for the winter months.” In the cold weather, he retreats to his office/workroom and watches his goldfish, listening to the bubbling water. I also love the sound of running water and have a small table-top fountain in my studio. It is always running and, in fact, I have recently bought my third, having burned out the motors in two previous fountains.

Coco of By Coco is like many of us and doesn’t always take time to relax. “Seems like there is always something that needs my attention.” Her favorite ways to relax are fishing, walking by the ocean, horseback riding, sailing and hunting for wild mushrooms. Since these activities are not always readily available to her, Coco has found what sounds like a wonderful alternative. “So when I feel overwhelmed and/or out of gas, regardless of the weather, I head outside to our hot tub and empty my mind to pray--not so much with words but with an inner quiet that lets me feel connected to and loved by God. Often, I get lost in the peace and enjoy it so much that I stay in for two rounds (20 min. each). It slows me down and renews my mind, body, and spirit. She sent me a photo of her hot tub set up. How lovely it is! I envy her!

Music is a big part of many people’s lives and Paige from Paige’s Beaded Designs is one of those people. In addition to selling her work on Etsy, Paige helps care for her many siblings, some of whom have special needs. “Without music, I couldn't live!” She escapes stresses by listening to her favorite bands (Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, or Motion City Soundtrack) very loud on her IPod. When she can, she finds videos on You Tube from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s that she grew up watching. After her family is in bed is Paige’s favorite time and she loses herself in her favorite television shows.

Paige finds inspiration by looking through her many beading magazines and catalogs and going to bead stores and looking at the textures and colors of the many beads there.

Karen from Threadbare Designs also uses music to relax, especially on commutes. "My other little trick is I sing in the car! I can use my MP3 and I just pull up a playlist and belt it out. I call my car my karaoke machine on wheels. It helps with the stress of commuting and summer traffic.” And because Karen works 12-hour shifts, she schedules crafting time and carves out time to exercise, hiking and biking in warm weather. She feels much better when she exercises and says her whole family notices when she misses exercise time.

And what do I do to help me relax? It’s hard sometimes when things are stressful, as I am sure many people know, but I do many of the same things as those above. I exercise as often as I can, and especially enjoy yoga, which helps relax and center me, but also helps with all the aches and pains that come with having an autoimmune disease. Regular massages also help, as well as hot bubble baths (I don’t have a hot tub, like Coco, but I do have a large soaking tub which gets a fair amount of use.) I listen to music when I exercise. Right now I am especially enjoying the most recent album by Nickelback, which has a couple of songs I find very inspiring.

I don’t watch much TV, but I can relate to Paige's escaping into TV shows, so I instead retreat into a favorite book when I need to lose myself. I have many well-loved books that I have read over and over. They are like old friends. I listen to NPR daily when I work and there are several shows I follow via the internet in case I miss them when they are on the radio. Some feed my mind with information and others entertain.

Lastly, I can’t forget my two most important sources of relaxation: Willow and Sammie, my cats. They always seem to know when I am stressed, sad, in pain, or just overtired. Snuggling and patting them comforts me like nothing else can. Many times I will feel too busy or overwhelmed to stop but they will insist on attention and just that few minutes will calm me.

I am sure there are as many ways to relax and rejuvenate as there are people who need relaxation and rejuvenation. With our busy lives it is so important to take care of ourselves. If we don’t there’s nothing to be inspired and nothing left for creativity. Especially those in care giving roles, anyone who takes care of someone else, must take care of themselves first. I am often reminded of something I read a long time ago that said, in essence, if we don’t take care of ourselves, we will not be able to take care of others.

Work Spaces: See Soul Designs

Our first installment of Maine Team work spaces comes from Kristina at See Soul Designs. Kristina graciously shared her images and thoughts about her work space.

My company is See Soul Designs. I make jewelry and accessories, as well as bags and various art. My space needed to fit all my many interests without getting too overwhelmed. I found the best solution for me was to divide my corners or areas according to craft theme. I have a desk and workspace for my jewelry, then I have a seperate space on the other side of the room for my sewing projects, and another corner and shelf for my painting. It has worked better for me this way, instead of unloading a bunch of things from all over the room onto a table, I can go to a designated area where all the supplies for that type of project are at arms reach and can be left to finish another day if need be, without having to move it for say a sewing project instead, or have all the things left out on the table and creating confusion.

I also try to pack the space on the walls or little empty spaces on shelves with all my little favorite things. Surrounding myself with these not only just makes me happy but it provides inspiration for my projects. If I see a beautiful picture of a cherry blossom in a magazine for example, I might tack it to my cork board, or if I find a beautiful antique ornament, I might hang it on the wall for inspiration.

Maine Team Member's New Brick and Mortar!

Meg Fournier of Lovelight Studio and her musician husband, Bub, are set to debut their first adventure in a brick and mortar retail space on June 5th, 2009. Located in scenic and hip Belfast, Maine, Roots and Tendrils will be a multi-use art space. Described as a seamless interaction between art, craft, and the indie music scene, Roots and Tendrils aims to cater to the 18-35 year old demographic, focusing not only on summer visitors, but also the year round citizens that are the very pulse of this up and coming community.

Removing walls to make way for the stage

Meg explained the significance of the name, Roots and Tendrils. Having lived in various urban spots outside of Maine, both Meg and Bub always boomerang back home to the Pine Tree State. It is those satisfying deep roots of Maine art, craft, and music mixed with the tendrils of the increasing presence of an urban vibe that inspired the birth of Roots and Tendrils. The couple's mission is simple: keep Maine's art, craft, and music roots alive, but foster and encourage the new direction all three are moving.

The multi-use art space is trifold: retail, gallery, and performance. The retail space will offer affordable, handmade items including housewares, clothing, jewelry, paper goods, and screen printed T-shirts. Quite a few Maine Team members will be represented in the shop, including Ferdinand, Purple Bean Bindery, Anabelfuzz, Helping Hands Pottery, Love Dog Card Company, Cozink, Littleput Land, One Woman Studio, and Sock Monkey Cards. Even though most vendors are from Maine, Meg admits that some "honorary" locals will also be represented in the future.

The gallery space overlaps with the retail space. With endless walls and superb light, the gallery will host a new show every month. The first of which is entitled "Visions from Voices", a collection of indie album art.

The space taking shape

The performance stage is towards the rear of the space, doubling as dressing rooms during the day. To prepare the retail space for crowds during the performances, Meg and Bub designed collapsible display cases that will essentially fold and stack into the shop's corners. Music genres that will be featured at Roots and Tendrils ranges from indie rock to bluegrass to punk. The first show scheduled for the evening of the opening features Dead End Armory, starting at 8pm.

On Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 to 3:00, over 25 sellers from the Etsy Maine Team will offer a hand-crafted shopping experience at Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot Road in Freeport, Maine.

This artistic gathering will have a fresh, eclectic mix of fiber/cloth arts, ceramics, jewelry, prints, original art, children’s items, and other handmade delights sure to tickle a shoppers fancy.

Enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee or tea while you browse unique items and meet the talented artists who create with Maine as their inspirational backdrop. And with free admission, complimentary refreshments, and oodles of parking, who could resist?

The Etsy Maine Team is comprised of over 300 gifted members who demonstrate the best of the artistic community. Fiber arts, ceramics, fine art, jewelry, kids stuff, and vintage are just a small representation of what we create and sell.
